spelling

May 8th, 2007 by admin

The word “occured” appears in google 12.4 million times, despite the fact that it’s not actually a word. The word “occurred” appears 217 million times. This means that people spell the word occurred incorrectly about 5.4% of the time on the computer, many of which have a spellchecker!

My question is this: are there any other words in the English language which people spell incorrectly at such a high rate?

By far (in my opinion) the most frequently misspelled commonly used word in English is “judgment”.
I’ve seen the word misspelled in judicial opinions and signs at the clerk of courts in the Manhattan Federal Courthouse for the Southern District of New York.
    Official Google count:
    101 million for “judgment”
    30 million for “judgement”
Despite spellcheck, people get it wrong 30% of the time!

“Judgement” is British so it’s hard to say how many of those hits spelled it “wrong”.

    “alot” = 50,800,000 ; “a lot” = 412,000,000
