The kesher Israel purim shpiel is online! W00t! I watched half of it last night (had to go to sleep), and will watch the rest later, but it looks great so far.

** DC Voting Rights Act Passes House Oversight and Government Reform Committee **

Good news! Efforts to give DC a vote in the House of Representatives are building up momentum. Just today the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee reported favorably on DC voting rights by a vote of 24-5. Tomorrow, the bill is going to have a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee, followed by a mark-up in the same committee on Thursday. Here are the details:

–> Judiciary Committee Hearing: Wednesday, March 14, 10 a.m., 2141 Rayburn;
–> Judiciary Committee Markup: Thursday, March 15, 2141 Rayburn.

Now that the legislation in moving in the House, it’s critical that Members of Congress around the country hear from their constituents on this issue. We need to leverage our friends and relatives who live outside the District of Columbia to take action on our behalf and urge their voting representatives in Congress to support the bill.

** Voting Rights March on April 16th **

I hope you can join Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, DC Council Chairman Vincent Gray,
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, and thousands of other activists in participating in the largest demonstration ever for DC Voting rights on April 16th.

We’ll be assembling at 2:30 at Freedom Plaza and then marching our way up Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol to demand voting representation in Congress. Thousands of people are expected to take the streets and deliver a strong message that it

    There is only one problem with H.R. 1433, the D.C. Representative Bill: it is unconstitutional. The Constitution states specifically that “[t]he House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second year by all the people of the several States,” and the District of Columbia is not a state. I would support this act fully if the Constitution is amended to allow the District of Columbia to have a voting member in the House of Representatives – and I would support said amendment. I write this even though I am very conservative; D.C. is very liberal, and; there would likely be a very liberal addition to the House of Representatives…
