This actually happened a long time ago now, but Borf was sentenced to a month in jail, 200 hours of community service, and $12,000 in restitution. I must admit to really liking the judge’s attitude and reasons for the sentence (read the whole article for the details) although I was really hoping for something a little more strict. I was hoping for 6 months in jail, during which time he would be forced to share a jail cell with an insane rapist, 1 full year of DC sanitation duty, during which time his primary job would be to clean up the city (including, but not limited to graffitti), and a steal cage death match with a lion. (If PETA disapproved of the lion, I would be more than happy to fill in).

The thing that annoys me the most about sports reporting is the way reporters seem to only look at the most recent game as proof of anything. Whoever won the most recent game is the certain winner of every game from here on out, regardless of other past performances. The minute the Mets won game 1 of the LCS by a score of 2-0, every baseball writer wrote a column descrbing how the series was in the bag for NY. When the Cardinals won the next game to tie the series, it was practically a forgone conclusion that they were going to win, and even moreso when they won game 3 to go up 2-1. When the Mets won game 4 to tie the series, again the wags gave them the series almost reflexively, ignoring the fact that the series was actually tied. I know it’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but you’d think that people who spent their whole lives around baseball would have some sense of perspective.
Overheard on the radio last night from Tim McCarver: “You’ve got to get all three outs to get out of this inning”.

Does reliance on technology occasionally make us stupid or are some people just born that way?

I don’t blame the state or the schools, I blame the lawyers and the overly litigeous society we have created.

In his book, congressman J.D. Hayworth made some comments about Henry Ford’s “americanization” project in a positive light. Since this was a notoriously anti-semetic idea of Ford’s, it is understandable that some Jews took offense.
Now let’s review what a good politician would do: he would make a speech apologizing for offending anyone, explain that he was taken out of context, and restate what he really meant.
What did Hayworth do? He bailed out of an appearance at a local synagogue and sent an aide instead. The aide told the crowd that Hayworth was a “more observant Jew” than they were. (This is interesting because Hayworth is Baptist). When the crowd walked out and a few people stayed behind for Q+A, another aide commented: “No wonder there are anti-Semites.”
As a public service announcement, I would like to mention that Hayworth’s opponent, Harry Mitchell, has, to the best of my knowledge, never been implicated in any activities involving anti-semetism, sleeping with pages, or satan worshipping.

Someone asked me recently how I learned to cook. I replied that I learned to cook in order to impress women (this is entirely true). It worked. (Which is ironic, because I must have done 1000 things to impress women between the ages of 18-24, and this is the only one that worked).
I find this interesting because before I got married (or at the very least, before I became engaged) my cooking was much more daring. I regularly searched out and tried new recipes. Since I got engaged, I don’t think I’ve been nearly as daring. Although part of that is time (working full time I don’t have nearly as much time as when I was a student), I think part of it is that I no longer need to impress women.

I like this method of blogging….
For some reasons Philadelphia winters seem worse than DC winters. I don’t know why since right now it’s only going down to the 40s, a temperature not unusual for any area on the east coast this tmie of year, but I just feel like I spend more time feeling cold. It may be because:
The heat in our building isn’t working.
Doesn’t anyone build with storm windows anymore?
I somehow managed to lose my fantasy football game this week because Rex Grossman got me negative points last night. Unbelievable. I knew I should have started Hasselbeck.
In 1984, the Detroit Tigers won the world series. Also, the Chicago bears made it to the NFC championship game. In 2006, the Tigers are in going to open the world series in a few days, and the Bears are 5-0, and likely headed to the playoffs. Also, a republican names Bush was in the whitehouse, albeit serving under the direction of an older man with grey hair who was not-so-secretly in poor health. Insert twilight zone music here.
In the PA governor’s race, has anyone else noticed that Lynn Swann’s debate strategy is reminiscent of Bush in 2004? Everyone says that Kerry/Rendell is a very good debator, and that Swann/Bush is the outsider with no real political experience. They then “win” the debate by simply not falling flat on their faces. It’s a good strategy – after all what we voters look for in a governor is someone who sets their expectations so low they can’t fail.
I can’t tell you how much joy it will give me to be able to vote for a senator again. It gives me even more joy to vote against Santorum.
Assuming Santorum loses (which the polls say is likely), Pennsylvania will have one of the most conservative Democratic senators (Casey) and one of the most liberal Republican ones (Specter).
Barrow Alaska has made both ESPN and the New York Times. For a town with a population of about 3000, that’s a lot of media exposure.

Random things:
I was checking out in the grocery store when the lady at the checkout line noticed me tossing a package of cheese into a bag which clready had meat in it. “Don’t you always keep your meat and your dairy separate?” she inquired.
The El-AL website proudly trumpets that they support IE, and other browsers will be supported soon. Yeesh, what decade are we in again? Speaking as a former web developer who spent time making sure javascript code would run in both IE and Netscape (I didn’t say it was recent experience), I can tell you with all confidence that it really isn’t that hard. We’re talking about just making sure to reference objects in one particular manner instead of another.
My office is on a “soft close” the week of Christmas. That means everyone is expected to take vacation time, unless they really REALLY want to work. I tried to get myself placed in the latter category since it’s not like I’ll be doing anything else over Christmas week (my dad will be working, my brother will still be in school, etc., etc.). Unfortunately they reasoned that they are already letting one person in my group work that week, and there won’t be enough work for both of us, so they’re making me waste a week of vacation on a holiday which is entirely meaningless to me. Why couldn’t they have forced me to take a week of vacation for sukkot or passover instead? Every day I’m starting to get jealous of Efrat more and more.
I’m going to Canada in November for a friend’s wedding. If anyone has any suggestions of things to do in Toronto, let me know.
If anyone knows of anything fo rmy wife to do while I’m in the hockey hall of fame, please let her know. :-)
Mother nature hates the New York Mets. Good for her.
I just found out that a friend of mine here has a family that runs a chocolate factory in New York.
Dredze and I finished the first chapter of pesachim tonight. Only 9 more to go! woohoo!

Steven Colbert is a genius. He actually managed to get a congressman to say “I enjoy cocaine because it’s a fun thing to do” on the air. He then followed up with a line so funny I almost fell out of bed. watch the whole clip

I look at the current Dodgers-Mets series and I see missed opportunities.
- Although we get to see both Maddux and Glavine, two former teammates and sure hall of famers at the tail ends of their careers, they’re not currently scheduled ot pitch against one another. I think if they did the story lines would be great for both of them.
- The Dodgers missed a serious opportunity in the second when they had 2 men thrown out at the plate in one play. Had they scored, or even stayed put, the Dodgers would most likely have won.
- J.D. Drew missed his chance to get “injured” this year. Now the most over-hyped “power hitter” in the game had to play a career high 146 games, and he has to play in a postseason too. Poor baby. (Yes, I still hold a grudge. Why do you ask?)
- We’re missing the chance to see if Pedro still has it at age 387. (Or whatever he’s up to now).
