ex-ter-mi-nate

Living in an empty apartment this week without Rebecca (who is in Philly), I’ve needed something to occupy my time. As it turns out, that something is the new Dr. Who series. It’s fairly cheesy and not entirely self consistent, but it’s surprisingly fun.

new apartment

Since Rebecca and I visited our new apartment a few days ago, and people have been asking about it, I figured I’d post some pics and a review. First of all, some pictures.

The good

  • The rent is cheap, and it’s freakin huge
  • There’s a small backyard and a porch.
  • Seperate living room and dining room
  • The living room has a (non-functional) fireplace. I guess one of us will have to do something worthy of putting on the mantlepiece.
  • The back door has a large wooden beam that sits across it and acts as a lock (this is in addition to the deadbolt). If the orcs ever attack, we’re all set.

    The bad

  • The mirror in the bathroom is hung about 12 inches too low to be useful. I think I can see my chin in it when I stand up straight.
  • Many of the cieling lights are just bare bulbs – no fixtures at all. (This is something that will be rectified).
  • The bathroom cieling was never finished. There is plaster falling from it and again, no fixture around the light. Instead they just put in a drop cieling, which looks really out of place in only one room.
  • no central air.

  • I’m back (sorta)

So after a week or so of the blog being offline, I finally decided to restore it. (A remarkably simple process that really only involved hitting the “rebuild site” button in the mt control panel). Unfortunately it appears that the most recent version of the template that I bothered to backup is this hideous one from years ago. Ah well, I’ll fix it over the weekend.

    shavuot

One of the best parts of shavuot is some of the great classes and learning that happens overnight. One of the worst things about shavuot is that it’s overnight. I wasn’t planning on staying up overnight until I saw the schedule of classes. It looks really good. Why can’t we have things like that every week at a normal hour?

Also on the theme of shavuot (and still thinking about memorial day), I bring you Rabbi Mordechai Willig’s article on spending shavuot in Jerusalem in 1967. (originally appearsed in The Commentator in 1982).
