whetting your apetite

March 30th, 2006 by admin

Me and a few co-workers standing in front of a rocket engine. Literally. When that thing is on it burns at 6000* F, which is actually hot enough to boil iron (not melt, boil).

This is the underside of the space shuttle. What you can see above my head is all of the heat tiles which cover the underside of the shuttle. I can assure you that I am NOT touching the shuttle itself.(Just a little perspective trick). Were I to touch the shuttle, the people who work there would have probably beaten me to death.
To my left is the landing gear. The hatch is closed for flight (obviously) and you’ll notice is also covered with heat tiles (the entire external surface of the shuttle is, except for the windows). At the moment the hatch is open and the wheels are visible.
